Surgical counts and post-op analgesia checklist

I standardized our laparotomy sponge/needle counts and first 24 hours of analgesia into a one-page checklist — counts at incision and final closure; methadone [redacted]/kg IM on recovery, NSAID once normothermic and well perfused. If you have a solid template for closed-suction drain monitoring (mL/kg/hr, character) or a cleaner way to log 15-blade changes and 3–0 PDS per case, I’d like to compare and can share mine.

I love the idea of a one-page checklist! For drain monitoring, I’ve found using an Excel sheet can really streamline tracking volumes. Any suggestions on tracking pain score?.

I’ve found that using colored markers on the checklist for different counts helps everyone quickly identify what’s been done and what still needs attention, especially during busy shifts. It makes the process smoother when everyone’s on the same page, especially during those crucial first 24 hours of analgesia. What do you think about adding a column for observed behaviors alongside pain scores?
