Seeing an abrupt uptick in canine respiratory cases from three unrelated boarding facilities in King County starting 12/22; most had Bordetella vaccination on record, point-of-care flu tests negative, and cough persisting 7–10 days. Is anyone else logging a similar pattern, and if so are you collecting swabs for multiplex PCR or submitting to the state lab so we can stand up coordinated surveillance and decide if an advisory is warranted?
Seeing the same since 12/22; best yield for me has been combined nasal plus oropharyngeal swabs into UTM within 48h of onset, kept cold, and overnighted to WADDL multiplex (https://waddl.vetmed.wsu.edu) with resp outbreak noted on the form. @OP if they’re already 7–10 days in, a brief saline neb before a cough-induction swab helped a bit, but sensitivity drops and I only add doxy if febrile.
I’ve had better PCR yield at WADDL when I do a 5–10 min sterile saline neb right before a deep oropharyngeal flocked swab. I skip the neb in dogs that are really dyspneic — @tmorris45, seen the same?
Spike here in King County kicked off 12/22 too — mostly Bordetella-vaxxed, flu-neg, cough hanging 7–10 days. I’ve been banking a second UTM aliquot at -80 and overnighting the first to WADDL; if we’re past about 5 days from onset I add paired pneumovirus/CPiV serology and a short doxy trial when there’s tracheal sensitivity or mucopurulent discharge, but I stop fast if no change — @tj1994, a quick leash trot to trigger a productive cough before swabbing has bumped my yield, the logistics.
